About roads, speed limits, mandatory car equipment, and some rules of the road. In the sections below, you can read more about toll roads, petrol prices, parking, speed limits, etc.

No road usage fee, except in Jurmala
In populated areas – 50 km/h
Outside populated areas – 90 km/h
Motorway – 110 km/h

Dipped headlights are mandatory
Maximum blood alcohol level 0.5 ‰
Talking on the phone while driving is prohibited
Winter tires are mandatory from December 1 to March 1
Chains are allowed on snow and ice
Studded tires are allowed from May 1 to October 1

Mandatory equipment:

  • Reflective vest,
  • Fire extinguisher,
Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers
Child seats/boosters are mandatory for children under 150 cm

Toll Roads

There are no toll roads in Latvia.

Payment is only required for entry into the resort area of Jurmala. The fee for entry is charged from April 1 to September 30. The rest of the time, entry to Jurmala is free.
Electric vehicles are exempt from the entry fee.

During the validity period of the pass, the number of entries is unlimited. Pass control is carried out using cameras.
The fine for entry without a pass is €50.

When paying at parking meters, the receipt for using paid parking must be placed in a visible place - on the left side of the front panel of the vehicle so that the controller can verify the presence and content of this document: information about payment, validity period, and document number must be visible.

Insurance

For traveling abroad, a Green Card insurance policy is mandatory. Policies are valid for 15 days, 1 month, 2 months, etc. monthly up to 1 year.
We also recommend having a medical insurance policy insurance abroad.
And to drive on the territory of Ukraine, you need to have a valid motor vehicle policy.

Mandatory Equipment

Equipment that must be present in the car:

Reflective vest – A reflective vest is mandatory for anyone exiting the vehicle at night or in poor visibility conditions.

Winter Tires, Studded Tires, Chains

Winter tires are mandatory from December 1 to March 1. The minimum tread depth should be 3 mm.
Use of chains is allowed only in snowy or icy conditions.
Studded tires are allowed from October 1 to April 30.
