Toll Roads

Swiss motorways require payment for usage. Toll roads are marked with a green motorway sign.
To pay, you need to purchase a vignette and affix it to the windshield as per the instructions. The cost of the vignette is 40 CHF (€ 38).
In 2020, the vignette looks like this:
Swiss Vignette 2020

The vignette is valid for 14 months, from December 1 of the previous year to January 31 of the following year. For example, the vignette for the year 2020 will be valid from December 1, 2019, to January 31, 2021.

Affix the vignette on the inside of the windshield, either in the lower or upper corner on the left, or in the middle from the top. The most common placement is the upper left corner. Placement locations are shown in the image below:

Parking in Switzerland

In most cities, street parking is paid and time-limited. Parking discs are used to indicate the parking time.

Parking zones are categorized by color:

  • White zone – free parking for an unlimited time (if not equipped with parking meters)
  • Blue zone – for drivers with a blue disc (purchased at police stations, tourist offices, and banks). The disc sets the start time of parking and allows up to 90 minutes of free parking.
  • Red zone – for drivers with a red disc (purchased at police stations, tourist offices, and banks). The disc allows 15 hours of free parking.
  • Yellow zone – parking prohibited

Switzerland also has Park & Ride (P+R) parking lots located near tram and bus stops.

The most convenient but also the most expensive option is to park in underground parking lots. Upon entry, you take a ticket, pay for the parking time when you leave, return to your car, and exit. This system is similar to paid parking systems in shopping malls in Ukraine.

Parking Disc

The parking disc should be placed on the front panel of the car so that inspection services can easily see it. The disc must be at least 11 cm wide and 15 cm long. The clock on the front side should indicate half-hour increments.

On the parking disc clock, you need to indicate the parking start time according to the table below:

Actual Arrival Time Time to Set on Disc Departure Time
08:00 – 08:29 08:30 09:30
8:30 – 08:59 09:00 10:00

18:00 - 07:59 actual time 09:00

These parking conditions apply every day, including weekends and holidays, unless otherwise indicated on road signs.
