Toll Roads

The toll fee for using roads (passage) for various types of vehicles depends on the type of vehicle, the number of axles, and the height of the front axle of the vehicle. There are five categories:

First Category A (IA) motorcycles (two-wheelers)
First Category B (IB) vehicles with two axles and a front axle height less than 1.3 meters,
Second Category (II) vehicles with three or more axles and a front axle height less than 1.3 meters,
vehicles with two axles and a front axle height more than 1.3 meters or less than 1.8 meters
and vehicles with a trailer with three or more axles, the height of axles and the front axle is less than 1.3 meters,
Third Category (III) vehicles with three axles and a front axle height over 1.3 meters
and vehicles with two axles and a front axle height the same as or greater than 1.8 meters.
  Fourth Category (IV) vehicles with four or more axles, the height of the front axle of which exceeds 1.3 meters.
The height of the vehicle on the front axle is measured vertically from the roadway to the highest point of the vehicle above the front axle.

Payment must be made at each point you pass through. The most popular route from the border of Serbia to the border of Greece (170 km), which goes through the A1 "Friendship" motorway, costs €5.50 for passenger vehicles.

How to Pay for Road Usage in North Macedonia

Toll fees on the highways in the Republic of North Macedonia can be paid at toll stations, in cash (in denars and euros), by non-cash payment (credit/debit cards), or through an electronic toll collection system using electronic smart cards and electronic toll collection (TAG).

Speed Limits in North Macedonia

Standard speed limits in North Macedonia (unless otherwise indicated on road signs).

Cars and motorcycles:
  • in urban areas – 50 km/h
  • outside urban areas – 80 km/h
  • on roads – 100 km/h
  • on highways – 130 km/h

The minimum allowed speed on the highway is 60 km/h.

Dipped Headlights

Dipped headlights are mandatory 24 hours a day, throughout the year. Fog lights can only be used in foggy conditions or reduced visibility.

Insurance

For traveling abroad, a Green Card insurance policy is mandatory. Policies are valid for 15 days, 1 month, 2 months, etc. monthly up to 1 year.
We also recommend having a medical insurance policy insurance abroad.
And to drive on the territory of Ukraine, you need to have a valid motor vehicle policy.

Winter Tires, Studded Tires, Chains

Use of winter tires in North Macedonia is mandatory from November 15 to March 15.
It is recommended to have anti-skid chains from October 15 to March 15. When in use, they must be installed on the driving axle.
Use of studded tires is prohibited.
