Methods of paying for roads in Portugal

There are different types of road tolls. Conventional barrier payment system and electronic.

Payment when passing barriers

Pay when you meet toll barriers where vehicles must stop.

Via Verde

You can become a ViaVerde subscriber by renting a transponder at the company's offices or at service stations along the road, marked with the appropriate sign. The rental price is proportional to the period of its use.
The first month costs € 4.99, and the following months – € 1.25

In addition, a €15 transponder deposit is charged. When leaving, the transponder must be handed in and then the deposit is returned.

The minimum initial balance must be €25 for a passenger car (Class 1), €60 for other classes.

In the case of renting a ViaVerde device, there are two payment methods:
Automatic payment – payment is debited from the credit card;
Prepayment - advance payment of at least €10 (cars) or €20 (trucks). In this case, the unused balance is not returned.

Electronic road payment

This system consists of gateways installed on motorways that detect passing vehicles and there is no need for physical toll booths or vehicle stops. A panel near each gate shows the toll.

If you drive on these roads with a vehicle with foreign registration, you must have an activated means of payment. There are several payment methods available only in electronic toll collection systems for cars registered abroad.

Payment cards purchased directly from the website are already active. No further operations are required. After the purchase, the client can immediately start using it.

Physical payment card (payment card purchased at a post office)
Physical payment cards have a hidden area that needs to be scratched to see the activation code.
To activate the balance of the paid card, the client must send a text message to the number +351 922 29 89 89 with license plate details and card CODE hidden under the gray area of the card.

The customer will receive a text message confirming the balance associated with this vehicle license plate.

vehicles It is a prepaid solution that does not require an electronic device. It is linked to the license plate of the car at the time of purchase. The Vasco da Gama Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge over the Tagus River north of Lisbon. The length of the Vasco da Gama bridge is 17,185 m. The bridge is part of the highway A12 Lisbon - Setubal.

The 25th of April Bridge is a suspension bridge connecting Lisbon on the north (right) and Almada on the south (left) bank of the Tagus River. The bridge is one of the 20 longest suspension bridges in the world.

The Marão Tunnel, located on the A4 freeway, is the longest mining tunnel in the Iberian Peninsula, has two one-way traffic galleries of 5,825 kilometers each. Each gallery has a carriageway with two lanes 3.5 m wide.

Parking in Portugal

In most cities, parking on city streets is paid and limited in time. There are different parking zones, which are marked by appropriate road markings and road signs.

Parking in Lisbon

Lisbon is divided into parking zones. Closest to the center is the red zone, in which some areas are separated in brown zone Further from the center is the yellow zone and behind it is green. Behind the green zone there are streets with free parking. Zones differ in price for parking and the maximum parking time of the car.

Parking fees can be paid through the available parking meters in the area where the limited parking system operates. For this:

  1. Insert the coins corresponding to the desired parking time into the parking meter. Parking meters accept coins in denominations: 0.05, 0.10, 0.20, 0.50, 1.00 and 2.00 euros.
  2. Confirm the parking time on the display.
  3. Click the green button to confirm the parking payment and receive a check-permit, or the red cancel button.
  4. Place the parking permit check inside the vehicle near the windshield so that the information on it is visible.
Parking meters do not give the rest, the entire amount entered is converted into parking time.

Time at which car parking must be paid.

  • From Monday to Friday: from 9:00 to 19:00 / 01:00.
  • Saturday: from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • Sundays and holidays: no service.

Parking in Porto

On-street paid parking is limited to Zones I, II, III, and IV and from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding public holidays. In zone I, parking is paid on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Payment is made in the Telpark and Via Verde applications or at parking meters on the streets. The maximum period of stay is indicated in the exact place and is from 2 to 10 hours.

Insurance

For traveling abroad, a Green Card insurance policy is mandatory. Policies are valid for 15 days, 1 month, 2 months, etc. monthly up to 1 year.
