Methods of paying for roads in Portugal
There are different types of road tolls. Conventional barrier payment system and electronic.
Payment when passing barriers
Pay when you meet toll barriers where vehicles must stop.
As you approach the toll gate, you will see this sign:
Manual payment lanes (get a ticket when you enter the motorway and pay the toll when you exit)
Payment lanes for users of the Via Verde system with forms of payment in cash and bank cards
Via Verde reserved lanes, which can only be used by customers who have activated Via Verde or a compatible device |
Via Verde
You can become a ViaVerde subscriber by renting a transponder at the company's offices or at service stations along the road,
marked with the appropriate sign. The rental price is proportional to the period of its use.
The first month costs € 4.99, and the following months – € 1.25
In addition, a €15 transponder deposit is charged. When leaving, the transponder must be handed in and then the deposit is returned.
The minimum initial balance must be €25 for a passenger car (Class 1), €60 for other classes.
In the case of renting a ViaVerde device, there are two payment methods:
Automatic payment – payment is debited from the credit card;
Prepayment - advance payment of at least €10 (cars) or €20 (trucks).
In this case, the unused balance is not returned.
