Toll Roads
Usage of highways in Slovenia requires payment. To make the payment, you need to purchase a vignette. The cost of the vignette depends on the duration of use and the type of vehicle. Passage through the Karawanken tunnel is paid separately.
Purchasing a Vignette
You can buy a vignette at the border, at gas stations like OMV Slovenija, MOL, Petrol, and at retail centers like SPAR.

Vignette Validity
7-day vignette is valid for 7 consecutive days from the marked date. For example, if you purchased it on August 15, it will be valid from August 15, 00:00, to August 21, 23:59.
1-month vignette is valid until the end of the day of the following month with the same number. For example, if you purchased it on August 15, it will be valid until September 15, 23:59.
1-year – valid from December 1 of the previous year to January 31 of the following year, i.e., for 14 months.
When purchasing a vignette, make sure the operator stamps the current date on it. After that, affix the vignette to the inside of the windshield in the upper left corner. Attach the vignette from the inside of the glass.
Vignette checks are carried out when passing through former toll booths. Follow the road signs and markings.

Passage through the Karawanken Tunnel
The tunnel is located between Slovenia (motorway A2) and Austria (expressway A11).

Speed Limits
Standard speed limits in Slovenia (unless otherwise indicated by signs).
Cars, motorcycles:- in populated areas – 50 km/h
- outside populated areas – 90 km/h
- road for cars – 90 km/h
- expressway – 110 km/h
- motorway – 130 km/h

Dipped Headlights
Dipped headlights are mandatory 24 hours a day throughout the year.
During daylight hours (from sunrise to sunset), under normal visibility conditions, you are allowed to use daytime running lights instead of dipped headlights.

Payment is made at parking meters. Parking is paid from 7 am to 7 pm on weekdays (Monday to Friday) and until 3 pm on Saturdays; parking is free on Sundays and holidays.

Insurance
For traveling abroad, a Green Card insurance policy is mandatory. Policies are valid for 15 days, 1 month, 2 months, etc. monthly up to 1 year.
We also recommend having a medical insurance policy insurance abroad.
And to drive on the territory of Ukraine, you need to have a valid motor vehicle policy.

Reflective vest – A reflective vest is mandatory for anyone exiting the car, during the day(!) or at night in the event of a stop or breakdown. The vest must be in the car, not in the trunk. |
Winter Tires, Studded Tires, Chains
Winter tires are mandatory from November 15 to March 15. Summer tires with a tread depth greater than 3 mm are also considered winter tires in Slovenia. All wheels must be equipped with winter tires. | |
Chains are only allowed on road sections covered with a layer of snow or ice. It is mandatory to use them on road sections marked with a sign (failure to use them results in a fine of €40): |
