About roads in Poland, speed limits, mandatory car equipment, and some rules of the road. In the sections below, you can read more details about toll roads, the cost of petrol, parking, speed limits, etc.

Toll payment is based on the distance traveled.
Urban areas – 50 km/h
Outside urban areas – 90 km/h
Expressway – 120 km/h
Motorway – 140 km/h

Low beam headlights are mandatory throughout the year.
Maximum blood alcohol level is 0.2 ‰.
Talking on the phone while driving is prohibited.

Winter tires are not mandatory.
Tire chains are allowed only on snow.
Studded tires are prohibited.

Mandatory equipment:
  • Emergency stop sign,
  • Fire extinguisher,
  • Reflective vest.
Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers.
For transporting children, a child seat is mandatory for children up to 150 cm in height.

Toll Roads

In Poland, tolls are paid based on the distance traveled at specific payment points located on the road (toll booths).

Upon entering the motorway, it is necessary to take a toll ticket. The ticket should be kept throughout the entire journey and will be used to pay for the distance traveled. In the absence of a ticket, the maximum amount is charged depending on the vehicle category.

Toll payment can be made in cash or by credit card. Cash is accepted in PLN, EUR, and USD. When paying in EUR and USD, banknotes up to 100 are accepted. Change is given only in PLN.

Speed Limits

Speed Limits in Poland

Standard speed limits in Poland (unless otherwise indicated on signs).

Cars and motorcycles:
  • in urban areas – 50 km/h (60 km/h from 23:00 to 06:00)
  • outside urban areas (single lane in each direction) – 90 km/h
  • outside urban areas (two lanes in each direction) – 100 km/h
  • on expressways (single lane in each direction) – 100 km/h
  • on expressways (two lanes in each direction) – 120 km/h
  • on motorways - 140 km/h
Cars with trailers:
  • in urban areas – 50 km/h (60 km/h from 23:00 to 06:00)
  • outside urban areas (single lane in each direction) – 70 km/h
  • outside urban areas (two lanes in each direction) – 80 km/h
  • on expressways – 80 km/h
  • on motorways – 80 km/h
The minimum allowed speed on motorways is 40 km/h.

Dipped Headlights

Dipped headlights are mandatory 24 hours a day, all year round.

During daylight hours (from sunrise to sunset) under conditions of normal visibility, daytime running lights can be used instead of dipped headlights.

Parking in Poland

In most cities in Poland, street parking is paid and time-limited.

Warsaw

Parking fees in the Warsaw parking zone are collected on weekdays from Monday to Friday, except May 2, December 24, and December 31, between 8:00 and 18:00. The parking fee must be paid as soon as the car is parked.
Parking rates Monday - Friday, 08:00-18:00:

  • first hour - 3.00 PLN,
  • second hour - 3.60 PLN,
  • third hour - 4.20 PLN,
  • fourth and each subsequent hour - 3.00 PLN each.

The minimum parking fee is 0.50 PLN, equivalent to 10 minutes of parking.
For example, the fee for 3 hours of parking is 10.80 PLN (i.e., 3.00 for the first hour + 3.60 for the second hour + 4.20 for the third hour of parking).

Krakow

Parking payment in Krakow applies on weekdays from Monday to Saturday between 10:00 and 20:00
Parking rates Monday - Saturday, 10:00-20:00

  • subzone A - each hour of parking: 6 PLN
  • subzone B - each hour of parking: 5 PLN
  • subzone C - each hour of parking: 4 PLN
The minimum fee is 2 PLN (Polish Zloty)
